homemade wine, pickled beets, rendered beeswax

today I've got a chore list a mile long. this isn't a complaint, this is a blessing.

funny thing I've learned about myself: I like working. I like laboring. especially when it means I can avoid going to a store to purchase something, because I've just made it at home.

so far on the list of completed chores:

bottling the homemade strawberry wine!

I've got three and a half big bottles, and two smaller bottles. I'll be drinking well for a while.

pickling beets:

one jar of pickled beets (red and yellow) in the fridge, doing their work. I had a few of the boiled beets left over, so those will be consumed with dinner, and I'm attempting to dye clothing with the leftover beet-water. not sure yet how the latter will go, but I've got high hopes.

rendering beeswax:

three more little blocks are cooling in the fridge. they smell so good.

I'd like to make my own candle wicks, so I can start on hand-dipped candles, but I think I might break and buy the wicks from the art supply store. I certainly could make it, but for goodness' sake, I'm giving myself a break on this one.

still on the list:
making castile soap
using that castile soap to make honey shampoo
hand-dipped candles? (if there's enough beeswax)
cleaning my bedroom (after cleaning the whole rest of the house, thanks for nothing, roomies)

I'm off the hook on the garden, today, for the most part. it started raining last night, and didn't quit until this morning, so the plants are soaked and happy. I do need to pick up some more soil though, and that's a hell of a chore (carrying a nearly 100 lb. bag of soil several blocks back to the loft, and then up to the fourth floor, might be my least favorite task). so yeah... I'm not really off the hook on that one, am I? so while we're at it...

transferring sprouting vegetables to a container with soil
picking up some pallets to install on the fire escape, so I can plant up instead of out

the funny thing is, sometimes I'll say "I wish I could just have a day to relax!", but I think I'm full of it. every time I have a moment to relax, to just sit down with a book, it usually only lasts as long as it takes me to eat a meal (which is one of the few things I have to patience to sit down for). the rest of the time, I'm either go-go-go, or reading about some other thing I can make or grow or raise or pickle or freeze or bake and then it's right back to go-go-go. bless you, Summer... I'm going to have to wait until Autumn, and see if that whole relaxing things comes a little more naturally to me when the temperatures start to drop.
