I'm having one of those days, I'm marveling at my life. I'm musing and amusing, kind of taken aback, surprised, happy, busy...
I woke up at 630am, so I could have done better sleep-wise, but my production has more than made up for it.
I fried green tomatoes
I made almond milk
I washed honeycomb for beeswax rendering
I treated my dog's ears and cough
I watered my garden
I made coffee, and lunch (sort of)
I smoked three cigarettes, and enjoyed them all thoroughly
it's just... I don't know, I kind of want to laugh at myself, when I'm saying out loud to my roommates or their friends,
"oh, yeah, sorry about the blender, I'm making almond milk..."
"don't mind that bucket, I'm cleaning the honeycomb in it..."
how did I get here? why haven't I always been here? how LUCKY am I??
my Momma raised me right -- we had goats, chickens, ducks, rabbits, at one point we had a pony, we had a garden -- she sent me to school with homemade lunches, a Thermos full of yogurt and granola. at the time, it was embarrassing. I was one of those carpet-bagger hippie kids, the ones who couldn't trade their lunchbox food for ho-hos because no one wanted what we had to offer. hand-me-down clothes (I remember opening the boxes with such excitement), chores on the weekends, we had to earn the fun stuff (I spent my 13th birthday money on a pair of rollerblades, apparently ignorant to the fact that I lived on a dirt and gravel road where they wouldn't get much use). these days, today, I am eternally grateful to her for making my childhood such a fruitful embarrassment.
so anyway... enough waxing poetic on my upbringing... here are some problems and solutions for today's troubles.
my little Pomeranian-mix dog, Ike, has a partially collapsed trachea, which means in warmer weather, or whenever he's particularly excited, he takes to producing an incessant goose-honking cough that not only disturbs him, but most likely sends my roommates up the wall. maybe you have a dog with the same problem, and if so, this is what worked for us today.
first, I put him in the hot, steaming shower with a little bit of eucalyptus oil. I thought he would hate this, but he ended up lying down and taking a nap, and his breathing was much less labored.
he also has constant ear infections, which I've been treating with 1/1 water and hydrogen peroxide, and then soothing with straight tea tree oil on a cotton ball, wiped generously on the inside of his ears.
here's the kicker for the cough, though -- honey! of course, honey. he's a little guy, so I only gave him a teaspoon. I let him lick it off the Andy Warhol plate, he enjoyed that.
I thought I was going to have to take him to work with me, he was just coughing and coughing and coughing... things have settled down, though, so although it would be fun to get away with him, I think I'll leave him at home to keep his brother company.
I washed the honeycomb today, three or four times in cold water, and I'm letting it drain dry in this bucket until tomorrow. it's in a paint strainer bag, which has proved to be a MOST useful tool these last few days. for like $4 (for two), I can't really complain.
I took my coffee this morning with honey and oat milk. I like the taste of the almond milk better, but neither of them last long in the fridge, and since I made the oat milk first (and it's sweetened), I figured I may as well use it now. I love opening my fridge and seeing all of my concoctions on the shelf.
the big bottle on the left is the almond milk, the smaller blue-tinted jar is the oat milk. shake well.
I've gotta tell you, too... it might take some time, but if you ever need to really convince your somewhat skeptical roommates that keeping a hive of bees on the roof is a good idea, this is the best way to do it.
no one is complaining, anymore!
they said it's floral, minty, and kind of citrusy. I'm cool with all of that, and I'm glad the girls made use of the mint I placed next to the hive (I was really hoping they would). I'm wondering if they also hit that apple tree over by the library?
