about me

my name's Vanessa, but I like to go by Scout -- your choice.

I live in a really great loft in an art building in Wicker Park, Chicago IL. I've got roommates, but they come and go.

I've got a cat named Olivia, and two dogs, respectively Ike and Al.

I'm into music (making it and listening to it). I like turning dumb things that I say when I'm talking to myself at home alone into poppy-country songs, and making plinky sounds on my synthesizers. I'm dead into saxophones, especially when they're really interesting and/or fed through a vocoder (think Bon Iver's 22, a Million or Colin Stetson). I like photography, cooking, baking, reading, yoga... all the good stuff. I get into my spiritual side, meditating with stones and rocks and crystals. I keep an altar, and although the word witch is a bit much, I do tend toward that sort of thing. I really enjoy a gorgeous, simple meal -- a baked chicken, a solid broth, fish in a tin, grain bowls, seafood soups, game meats, fried chicken, spongey cornbread, kimchi, fried eggs on nearly everything, a superb peanut butter, a fresh peach, crabapples, elotes and sausages from street vendors, homemade bread, strawberry shortcakes with hand-whipped cream, that first really fresh tomato sandwich, not to mention just a slice of tomato sprinkled with salt and pepper, Vietnamese iced coffee, pho, and always always always a solid bourbon straight up.

I make kombucha, keep a vermicompost going, I'm an enthusiastic if somewhat occasionally disappointed gardener, and a first-year beekeeper.
