wanna try something weird?

I love that when I say "wanna try something weird, from the garden?" my roommates, for the most part, are game. so fun fact of the day, if you let French radishes flower, they produce these little pods that are quite satisfyingly crunchy and fresh. give it a try, some time. I imagine they'd be pretty good atop a salad, or as part of a fresh, green broth-over-rice dish (which many of my dishes are). I might never find out, because I've been eating them all individually, and might only go so far as to dip them in a little bit of salt, edamame-style, before they're gone. my back is still f--ked, but a little less f--ked than yesterday. I had to enlist the help of a friend who does healing stuff, and while I haven't received the full rub-down and gong treatment yet, he poked and prodded and pulled at me for a little bit, and it did help, some. I'm still pushing it with the yoga, and managed to do things this morning without getting stuck, so that's ...

ah, vegetables!

well, I was ready to give up hope on every growing any vegetables. I mean, I had some fun with the French radishes, but they do not a meal make. it seemed like my garden was gorgeously green and lush and alive, but the vegetables weren't showing up... until last weekend. surprise! I've got little tiny cherry tomatoes, and chubby cucumber babies! it's happening! the funny thing is, I want to be all cool about it, but I'm just not. I'm excited. I'm stoked. I'm really proud of these little things. I can't wait to eat them up. honestly, sometimes the whole scene is so charming, it's almost too sweet to believe. I was sitting on my "porch", eating a piece of sourdough bread slathered with my homemade blackberry jam, I reached a spoon into the bucket of honey from my hive that was filtering in the sun next to me and drizzled it on the bread, and as I was bringing it to my mouth, a honeybee landed on one of the cucumber flowers. ...

today I've got a chore list a mile long. this isn't a complaint, this is a blessing. funny thing I've learned about myself: I like working. I like laboring. especially when it means I can avoid going to a store to purchase something, because I've just made it at home. so far on the list of completed chores: bottling the homemade strawberry wine! I've got three and a half big bottles, and two smaller bottles. I'll be drinking well for a while. pickling beets: one jar of pickled beets (red and yellow) in the fridge, doing their work. I had a few of the boiled beets left over, so those will be consumed with dinner, and I'm attempting to dye clothing with the leftover beet-water. not sure yet how the latter will go, but I've got high hopes. rendering beeswax: three more little blocks are cooling in the fridge. they smell so good . I'd like to make my own candle wicks, so I can start on hand-dipped candles, b...
