anyone who complains about Chicago winter is being just about as basic as one can be. it's not the winter that's difficult, it's the spring. we get one or two (or three?) of those days that are warm, almost sticky with it, there are kids playing basketball in the park, and much walking around and admiring of the trees and flowers, birds singing in the sky, and then we're put in our place with 2-3 weeks of rain, and when the sun finally emerges, it feels like it's impossible for it to creep out of the high-50s. what a tease. this is when I start to wonder, will we ever be warm again? surely we will, but hope begins to falter...
the garden is marching slowly on, though a few of the beginning sprouts (the lemongrass comes to mind) have either disappeared, or gone back down in the soil to rethink things. the potatoes can't be bothered to do anything but grow, and grow, thank goodness, and the flowers and French radishes march on, but I'm sure they'd like a bit of warmth just as much as I would.
the bees have not arrived. they were supposed to be here at the end of April, then it was to be the first week of May, and here we are on the 8th of May and I still don't have bees, or any word of bees. it might be for the best, as I also haven't yet received my orders of the veil, gloves, hive tool, etc., and I would prefer not to buy doubles of those things... however, my eager anticipation has quickly taken a turn for slight annoyance and impatience.
